| Dog Houses and Your DogWhen Being "In The Dog House" Is a Good Thing! We all have heard of being “in the dog house”, but what is the origination of the phrase? Some believe the term came from the railroad industry.Traditional locomotives typically required a head-end brakeman and a brakeman at the rear of the train. However, locomotives also needed a fireman, who managed the output of steam, but who also acted as the right-hand man to the train engineer. Space inside the cabin was tight, and a fireman typically didn’t like to share his seat. Although newer locomotives were built to accommodate both men, older locomotives were modified with the creation of a small cabin for the head-end brakeman; this special cabin was called a “doghouse”. Perhaps the term “sleeping in the dog house” logically followed, which typically refers to a lovers’ spat resulting in the man sleeping with the dog. Common references to “in the dog house” generally refer to being in some sort of trouble. But, sleeping with the dog has come a long way, with luxury accommodations for your four-legged friend that are both fashionable and functional. For example, for the utilitarian, there are cedar dog houses which have basic style, and the cedar wood is known for insect resistance, long-lasting durability, and the ability to withstand the elements. For those who are more drawn to aesthetics, there are dog houses made to look like mini human domiciles dog houses. They utilize premium siding and roofing materials which are made for inclement weather and can be customized to the owner’s liking; they also offer raised floor panels to promote air flow and resist decay. Other accommodations will make your dog feel like he is at a vacation resort dog houses! Some offer modern designs such as huts and chalets, and others even offer porches or decks. Who knows, even the jilted lover’s head will be turned by some of these beauties. Being banished to the “dog house” is looking better and better! Many dog houses also offer insulation and accessories such as heaters and air conditioners, which can be critical during harsh temperatures. Of course, always use caution and common sense; bring your dog inside for extreme cold or heat, and ensure that when your dog is outside, he has plenty of fresh water and a comfortable sleeping area. There are dog houses to suit every personality and taste. So, when it’s “raining cats and dogs”, be sure your pooch is protected! | |||||||||
